Children & Meth
November, 2006

In Louisiana - A husband and wife, both 24-years-old, were arrested and charged with cruelty to a juvenile, a felony punishable by 10 years in prison.  They were arrested four days after their 13-month-old son tested positive for Meth.  The child’s blood was tested when they took him to an emergency room after he ate something at home and became ill. The boy was treated for symptoms of a drug overdose.  He recovered and was placed in state custody.

In Georgia - The Department of Family and Children Services alerted a sheriff’s department of possible Meth manufacturing going on in a home with a young child present.  When deputies investigated, they found items for a Meth lab, Meth, partially finished Meth product, drug-related items and several firearms.  The parents, a 36-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman, were arrested.

In Oklahoma – Authorities believe Meth use may be the reason a 26-year-old woman who was 7-months pregnant crashed her truck. She also had her two daughters, seven and four-years old, in the truck.  Police found a bag of Meth outside the truck, as well as drug paraphernalia in the woman’s pocket.  She told officers that she fell asleep after being awake “for an extended time.”  The seven-year-old girl was not injured in the accident; the four-year-old was badly hurt.  The woman’s baby was delivered by emergency surgery, and reportedly was not doing well.  Authorities are waiting for results of a blood test before considering drug charges.  The woman could face charges for not properly securing her children in the truck.

In Michigan - A 23-year-old woman was arraigned on charges of Meth and marijuana possession and child endangerment.  Two children were placed into the custody of Family Court and the Michigan Department of Human Services.

In Mississippi - A 51-year-old man was arrested at his home, along with two others, 37- and 29-years-old, on charges of conspiracy to manufacture Meth.  The 51-year-old also faces child endangerment charges in connection with conditions surrounding a 16-year-old female at the home. The Department of Human Services transferred custody of the teen to her mother.

In New York - Police arrested five people during a Meth lab raid.  State troopers found the active Meth lab, more than 20 liquid ounces of Meth; several fire arms, and drug-making equipment.  One woman and four men are charged with criminal possession.   Troopers also removed an infant from the home.

In California – A
Meth distribution group based in a home was shut down, with officers seizing about 1.3-pounds of Meth and arresting three people.  The search also turned up a scale, packaging material, payment records and currency. Three children – 3-, 9- and 12-years-old, who lived in the home were taken into protective custody.

In Michigan - Three children were taken into protective custody and two people were arrested after police, acting on a tip, raided a home.  Officers found Meth inside the home.  The two suspects will be arraigned on Meth-related charges.

In California - Four young children were placed in protective care when police busted their parent's home Meth lab.  Officials say the entire house was contaminated, and the children's rooms and toys were covered in chemicals and Meth.

In Indiana - A man confronted two deputies investigating a strong smell in a trailer home. The man ran towards the bathroom and the deputies followed him.  The officers were able to subdue him, but when they handcuffed the suspect, a ball of fire went past them.  A Meth lab had caused a small explosion in the bathroom; two children were asleep in the room next to it. They were not hurt and were placed with children's services.  The man and the children’s mother were both arrested.

In Alabama – Officers following up on a tip arrested a couple for running a Meth lab in their car.  The 29-year-old woman and 22-year-old man are charged with unlawful possession and manufacturing of a controlled substance.  Deputies also found the woman’s nine-year-old son in the car.

In Kentucky - Three people, including two children, were taken to a hospital after an explosion at an active Meth lab in a mobile home.  Two sheriff's officials were also injured.  The officers went to the home to investigate a report of a chemical smell and to serve a warrant for failure to pay child support on a 31-year-old man who lived in the trailer. The man, as well as a 27-year-old woman, were both at home and tried to run from the officers.  As one officer handcuffed the man, there was an explosion in the bathroom – just about a foot away from two sleeping children, a 1 1/2 year old and a 4-year-old. A fireball from the explosion pushed one suspect and one officer out the door of the mobile home.  Authorities suspect the explosion was a result of chemicals being thrown into the toilet before sheriff's deputies entered the mobile home.  The hospital examination of the children found that they were not injured. They were placed with social services.

In Oregon – A 47-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man were arrested after officers discovered several small bags of Meth and other drug paraphernalia at their home during a search.  They were being held on charges of distribution and possession of drugs, endangering the welfare of a minor and criminal mistreatment.  A juvenile and a 73-year-old man were taken into protective custody.

In Michigan – Agents acting on a tip responded to a house and discovered remnants of a Meth lab, along with Meth, marijuana and firearms.  Investigators believe the occupants of the trailer had cooked Meth earlier in the day and then tried to destroy the lab before the detectives got there.  Three people were arrested on various charges, including a charge of child endangerment.  Officers found an 11-year-old child in the trailer.

In Arkansas - Odd rashes on elementary-age students sparked an investigation that led to the arrest of a 49-year-old man who was operating two Meth labs in his home. A school nurse discovered the rashes, and a doctor confirmed the rash was consistent with those caused by chemicals during Meth manufacturing.  Police were called and as part of the investigation, they received permission to search the suspect’s house.  Officers discovered two Meth labs - one inside and one outside.  They also found several jars of chemicals in the process of cooking Meth throughout the house. Two children, aged 9 and 10, lived in the house and both had active medical rashes from the chemicals.  The suspect was arrested for child endangerment, manufacturing and possessing a controlled substance, and unlawful use of paraphernalia.

In Florida – Police searching for a stolen golf cart ended up making a Meth bust.  When officers arrived at the house with a search warrant, they saw what appeared to be a man smoking Meth on the back porch.  The 36-year-old was arrested on drug possession charges.  Investigators found his 2-year-old son and another man, 51-years-old, inside the house.  Officers also smelled a chemical odor associated with Meth manufacturing and tracked the smell to a Meth lab in the house.  Investigators found a pickup truck that had been reported stolen – and the stolen golf cart was also recovered.
