Pseudoephedrine-Free Sudafed Coming to Market
Pfizer, Inc., the manufacturer of Sudafed, is introducing a new formula of its popular decongestant medication to American consumers. The company will launch Sudafed PE on January 10th. The new product contains phenylephrine in place of pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine is a key ingredient in Meth manufacturing. Many retailers now limit the amount of Sudafed customers are able to buy and some restrict access to prevent Meth cooks from shoplifting the medicine. Pfizer Inc. spokeswoman Erica Johnson explained the company's decision as, "(A) matter of striking a balance between giving access to legitimate consumers of the medicine and preventing criminals from getting hold of the product to convert it to methamphetamine." Johnson said the new formula has been sold for years in Europe and has proved safe and effective.

The Indianapolis Star Darcy
Jensen, Director of MAPP-SD, feels the move by Pfizer, Inc. is a good first step
on the road for companies joining the battle against Meth. She cautioned,
however, that "there are numerous other products containing ephedrine or
pseudoephedrine still readily available to Meth cooks." Until all such products
are either reformulated or the access is restricted, retailers and consumers
alike need to stay on guard against those who steal or purchase large amounts of
these items.
