A new
women-only chemical dependency treatment group at the Minnehaha County Jail is
designed to help female prisoners overcome their addictions and help them form a
plan for a life beyond the cell. Meth use and addiction is the predominant
issue for members of the group. According to the assessments taken between July
and September of 2005, more than two out of five (approximately 40%) of the
women sentenced to prison terms in the county have Meth addictions – a bit more
than twice as much as male prisoners.
The top reasons women in the group name for starting Meth are losing weight and
the need to get more things done in a limited amount of time. This is in sharp
contrast to the reasons men offer: depression or gaining social skills.
