A 19-year-old Watertown
man made a bid for freedom while waiting for his jury trial on charges of
distributing Meth. His defense attorney asked the court to reduce the man’s
$5,000 cash bond down to a personal recognizance bond – where the suspect would
be released pending trial. The State’s Attorney’s office argued against the
motion, saying that even though the suspect was not a strong flight risk, the
severity of the crime didn’t warrant a reduction. The judge in the case ordered
a compromise: the cash bond was reduced to $1,000.
The young man was arrested in late December 2005, after an investigation lasting
nearly three months. When a warrant was executed at his residence, authorities
found several bags of pot, a white powdery substance, drug paraphernalia, a
number of cell phones,
200 foilies (small pieces of
tinfoil) with traces of what is believed to be Meth
residue, cash and many other items. If convicted on the charges, he faces a
mandatory one-year minimum imprisonment sentence.
