HB 1258 Steps Up Protection for Children

Governor Mike Rounds signed House Bill 1258, redefining the concept of abused and neglected children.

For the past year the state has been allowed to remove children whose parents are caught manufacturing Meth, but youngsters exposed to the using or selling of the drug were exempt from the rule.  Now, South Dakota's definition of abused and neglected children includes those "Whose parent, guardian, or custodian knowingly exposes the child to an environment that is being used for the manufacture, use, or distribution of methamphetamines or any other unlawfully manufactured controlled drug or substance." (HB 1258 (10))
