After three months, a new Iowa state law limiting over the counter purchases of medicines containing pseudoephedrine (a common ingredient in Meth) is being hailed as a success. Governor Tom Vilsack announced that the number of labs discovered in the Hawkeye state dropped by 75.5% compared to the same time frame a year earlier – dropping from 286 labs in the same three months of 2004 to 70 labs in 2005. The new law requires customers to show identification and sign for the medicines before they can buy them. There is also a limit on the amount a person can buy. Gov. Vilsack is impressed with the laws effectiveness, commenting “We knew it would make Iowa communities safer places. Little did we know the impact would be so positive, and so soon.” Information from Sioux Falls Argus Leader
