Iowa Targets Meth Ingredients

Iowa's Governor Vilsack signed a bill into law to help crack down on Meth labs.  The new restrictions, taking affect in May, get tough on people buying large amounts of over the counter medicines containing pseudoephedrine.

After the law is in full swing, stores will only be able to sell single packages of liquid and liquid gel capsules containing less than 360 milligrams of the ingredient.  That is about the amount found in some children's cold medicines.  Retailers will have to keep the products locked up.  Customers who want to buy products with more than the allotted amount will have to purchase them from a pharmacist.  The new law also restricts the amount of pseudoephedrine people can buy during a month.  That provision is designed to prevent Meth cooks from stockpiling the pills.  Anyone buying products containing pseudoephedrine will have to show photo identification and sign a log sheet that tracks the purchases.

Governor Vilsack says he has a deep passion to fight against Meth in his state and across the nation.  He explained that he went to his hometown, Mount Pleasant, over the Christmas holidays and met with families who have been affected by Meth.  Their stories helped fuel his passion to attack the Meth epidemic.
