The kidnapping and murder of a fourth-grader from a small Indiana town brought the horror of Meth to the forefront of America’s attention during the end of January. Ten-year old Katie Collman was first reported missing on January 25, when she failed to return home from an errand to a store - she went out to buy bathroom tissue. Two days later – when authorities had enough information to share with the public - an Amber Alert for Katie was issued. The 2,000 residents of her hometown, Corthersville, prayed for her safe return. Three days after the Alert was issued, Katie’s body was discovered in a creek. Police have arrested three men so far in Katie’s murder – a 22-year old, a 20-year old and a 17-year old. Prosecutors claim the 20-year old tied the youngster’s hands behind her back – and she either was pushed into the creek or fell in when she tried to run away.
According to one suspect’s statement, Katie was abducted and slain because the
men feared she saw Meth being made in an apartment near her home.
Her family
plans to raise money to build a playground in her memory on the site of the Meth
operation linked to her death. Her murder was the first in 25 years in
Corthersville. |
