In
Utah - An appeals court upheld the life sentence
of a former Utah businessman who once was considered one of the biggest Meth
dealers in the state. The defendant claimed the judge in his trial committed a
number of errors. He was tried and convicted in 2004. At the time of his arrest,
he owned four cigarette retail stores. He was one of 24 people indicted in 2003
on charges of running a Meth ring alleged to have sold hundreds of pounds of
Meth with a profit of nearly $5 million from 2001 to 2003. Since the man was
tried, convicted and sentenced in the federal system, he has no chance for
parole.
In
California - A home where police arrested seven people in late December on a
variety of Meth related charges and child endangerment is unfit for occupation.
After a city building inspector and an assistant fire marshal toured the home
they declared it condemned for “numerous health and safety violations”. Among
the adults arrested were the parents of two children, 8- and 9-years-old, who
lived in the home.
In
Iowa – A married couple convicted of making Meth near an elementary school
will serve lengthy prison sentences, enhanced because a judge found they
endangered children. The 33-year-old man was sentenced to 25-years and six
months in federal prison.
His
32-year-old wife was given ten years and eight months. The sentences were
enhanced because the judge found the crime created substantial risk of harm to
children in their house and children in the neighborhood. Three children were
removed from the couple's home after a search found items used to make Meth.
In
Kentucky - A 37-year-old man was charged with operating a Meth lab and
possessing Meth after a neighbor reported a disturbance at the man's
condominium. Police found the suspect bruised and complaining of back and chest
injuries. He said two of his employees had assaulted him. Officers noticed the
ingredients and materials for cooking Meth while they were taking his statement.
In
California - A 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing Meth
for sale. Deputies found him hiding in a back room of a house they were
searching. They also found a large amount of Meth packaged up for sale and a
scale.
