MAPP-SD, a project of Prairie View Prevention Services, Inc., is a comprehensive Methamphetamine awareness and prevention project. 
MAPP-SD is dedicated to:
u   Increase awareness of Meth and the problems associated with its use, manufacture and distribution;
u Provide, at no cost, professional Meth awareness and prevention education to groups and organizations on a community, regional and statewide level;
u Be a no-cost, ongoing resource for South Dakota citizens to deal with issues rising from the manufacture, use and distribution of Meth.

Tackle the Topic

Talk to your patients if you suspect they may be using Meth.  Use a statement like the following to bring the topic up:

How did your teeth get to be this way?  Normally, we don't see this kind of decay and/or tooth damage very often.  It usually happens if someone drinks excessive amounts of sugary soda or takes drugs.  Have you used Meth or are you using now?

Point out the signs of damage.  Express concern and use the opportunity to educate your patient while discussing their dental findings.  Present the facts (without blame), explaining how important it is to stop now.

Stop discussing the topic if the patient becomes agitated, nervous or paranoid.  Remember, their behavior can be unpredictable. [Review How to Deal with a Tweaker for more]  Have a prearranged signal that will alert everyone on the staff without alarming the patient further.
